About Hydroxychloroquine Tablets
Hydroxychloroquine is an antimalarial medicine. Doctors prescribe it to prevent and treat malaria, and to treat lupus (systemic and discoid lupus erythematosus) and rheumatoid arthritis. In the US it is sold under the brand name Plaquenil and as generic tablets, most often 200 mg.
People who take it for a long time need regular eye checks, because it can rarely damage the retina, and it can affect heart rhythm. Hydroxychloroquine isn’t authorized to treat or prevent COVID-19: the FDA ended its emergency use authorization in 2020 because it was unlikely to help and had known risks.
